NDC Tasmania Tasmania NDIS Support: SIL, Respite Care, Daily Living Assistance

What Is the NDIS and How Does It Work? (Simple Guide for 2026)

If you’re wondering “What is the NDIS?” or “How does NDIS work?”, you’re in the right place. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s way of helping people under 65 who have a permanent and significant disability. It gives you your own funding so you can choose the supports you need to live a better, more independent life.

At NDC Tasmania (ABBDS), we’re a friendly Tasmania-based NDIS provider in Hobart. We help people of all ages (4–65) with low, medium, or high support needs. We love making things simple and fun!

Who Can Get NDIS

You can join the NDIS if you:

  • Live in Australia (citizen, permanent resident, or  specialized category visa as per NDIS guidelines).
  • Are under 65 when you apply.
  • Have a disability that is permanent and makes everyday things harder.

Just send in some medical proof and the NDIA will check if you qualify.

How the NDIS Works – Easy Steps

  1. Apply Fill in a quick form or call 1800 800 110.
  2. Talk about your goals Meet a planner and tell them what you want (like making friends, learning skills, or getting a break).
  3. Get your plan and money Your plan has a budget split into parts: daily help, skill-building, and equipment.
  4. Choose how to use the money
    • Let NDIA pay providers directly.
    • Use a plan manager (easiest for most people).
    • Manage it yourself.
  5. Pick your supports Choose providers you like – like us at ABBDS!
  6. Check and change Every 1–3 years your plan gets reviewed so it still fits your life.

What’s New in 2026?

The NDIS is getting some updates to keep it fair and strong:

  • Easier planning meetings (less paperwork).
  • Money released in smaller chunks so you can plan better.
  • New help outside the NDIS for little kids with mild delays.
  • Small price rises for support workers (about 4%).

Nothing to worry about – we’ll help you through every change.
